I attended the World Premier of Winnie The Opera presented at the State Theatre, Pretoria on Thursday 28 April 2011. It was my first opera ever and having watched scenes in movies where opera is featured, this production definitely breaks new ground. The feedback from the Producers is that clapping between scenes, whistling and ululating at an opera is unheard of.
After the show, the Mother of the Nation took to the stage and made the following heartfelt statements;
• she was humbled (and it showed) as Winnie The Opera was the first time she has ever been officially honoured in S.A.
• State Theatre was a venue she and other struggle veterans had struggled to bomb and she never imagined she would set foot in it
• she turns 75 in September and she is a hot grandma because of the love of her children and grandchildren
• her gratitude to the show producers as supporters of The Arts was expressed
• the struggle is not over, it’s taken a different shape
I was privileged to meet the larger than life Ms Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, she was real, modest and maternal. OMG!
