Centre: Dada Masilo with friends |
So. So. So! So Shizeeda has got connections. On a rainy Sunday in January we met up to take in a bit of
kulcha. We headed to Newtown, Bassline.
Dada Masilo staged her Swan Lake ‘open final dress rehearsal to prior to
next season in Europe’ as stated on the invite.
I thought her interpretation
to be remarkable. The performance from some of the dancers was shoddy in certain
aspect as it was clear they did not invest daily discipline in their
craft. That said: South Africa has been a country where select artists can make
a living off their craft. I
digress. Dada’s piece is re-contextualized to speak to homosexuality, includes
South African vernacular and dance style. A fresh take on a globally acclaimed ballet that I hope all audience
will appreciate. I just hope they
wont have to contend with a toddler in the audience who loudly asks questions
throughout the show. Not cool. Even at an open dress rehearsal.
Here's a snippet of our experience...
