Fine Art Printmaking Exhibition (Updated)

'Train Station' by Dina Kroon, Cyanotype
Over sixty-four artists' works are on display for PRINTMAKING 2012 at the Old Sandton Gallery, Nelson Mandela Square. The exhibition opened last night and will run until 12 September, overlapping the upcoming Joburg Art Fair. Show your support for South African art by attending; gallery hours are 09:30 – 16:30 daily and entry is Free.99.

The showcase is billed as the Fine Art Printmaking Exhibition of South African Contemporary Prints. Based on the various printing techniques and the number of artists participating, the curator did an outstanding job or representing the diversity of our country. I took art as matric subject but had never heard or seen of some the print techniques deployed by some of the artists.

The pieces are either simplistic (if there is such a thing in art) or esoteric or fantastic or thought-provoking or sensual or convoluted or just plane strange, depending on our interpretation.

'Messenger IV' by Hentie van der Merwe

'The Wisdom of Dragonflies 7' by Chris Diedericks
I'm always on the lookout for weird or monstrous looking bunnies, since watching 'Donnie Darko', much like the above. Both artists have used the etching technique to print.

'Everything you like it, ...' by  Leroye Malaton
'Lines connected with time' by Thabo Motseki
The full title of Leroye's linocut is 'Everything as you like it. Fresh from the factory'. Thabo's piece is also linocut.

'Shame 1' by Brett Murray, Litho

By Lizzette Chilvers

The two works by Lizzette Chilvers use paint on perspective, transfer print drypoint technique. I don't fully understand what that means but it looks pretty cool.  I think the one on the left (yellow dress) is titled 'You have the skills' 'You will love her' the one on the right (red skirt) is 'You will love her' 'You have no idea'.

Much more is on display this exhibition which is represented by The SA Print Gallery, Artist Proof Studio and Blue Door Studio.
